"We all want progress. But progress means getting nearer to the place where you want to be. And if you have taken a wrong turning, then to go forward does not get you any nearer. If you are on the wrong road progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man."
C.S. Lewis
First, we are Christians and like all Christians, we are seeking to know if God is real. But along the way, wrong turns can happen.
At Backtrackers, when a direction that we have once accepted as being the "right way" no longer makes sense, rather than being steadfast and pressing on, we examine ourselves and if need be, retrace our steps in pursuit of the "true" path.
Contrary to what it sounds like, "Backtrackers" are NOT the same as backsliders or deconstructionists.
We are not about walking away from God, reinterpreting sin or tearing everything down to create a more comfortable belief system.
Our method is aimed at finding truth, not creating our own.
By backtracking, we have learned that the God Jesus spoke of is FAR different and greater than we have ever been taught.
What does that mean? It means we have a God that handles our anger, ignorance, questions, confusions, doubts and our mistakes. How? Because Jesus said God loves us and that is what real love is.
"If a desire exists, then a satisfaction for that desire must also exist" - C.S. Lewis
Some people say, “If there is no evidence, it is not real”.
But history has shown us that lack of evidence does not equal lack of existence.
Take the atom.
The idea that everything in the universe is made up of tiny, invisible particles began as a theory, amazingly proposed by Democritus around 400 BCE. He had no way to prove it. No scientific instruments of any sort. Just reasoning and imagination.
And for almost 2,000 years, the idea was ignored. Not because it was wrong, but because it couldn’t be proven. But once the tools finally caught up, it turned out Democritus had indeed been right.
And this is where we believe the arguments of the atheist clearly fall short.
By claiming “God doesn’t exist because we haven’t proven it” overlooks the fact that countless things throughout history were real long before we had the means to prove they existed. Atoms. Germs. Gravity. None of them were invented because we had discovered them. They were already there, waiting to be found and understood.
So it seems, asking “Is God real?” isn’t a fool’s journey after all. It is the logical first step toward finding something we are not yet equipped to measure or understand, always with the hope that someday, we will.
